Health Benefits of Walnuts - Walnuts seem to be one of the oldest tree foods known to man much before 7000 BC. Walnut trees are mostly found in Kashmir. Walnuts have special significance in Kashmiri Pundit culture. They have special importance during Shivratri festival.

Apart from these walnuts have tremendous health benefits also. Walnuts are brain shaped and can be halved equally which represent two brain hemispheres.

Walnuts no doubt are of different varieties, yet they are rich in large number of chemical compounds such as omega-3 fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, anti oxidants, flavonoids, neuro protective compounds, vitamins E and B. Omega -3-fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids are the best compounds for heart and reduce cholesterol levels.

Their heart protective effects are well known. Walnuts also contain melatonin, a compound which can induce sleep as well. The presence of anti oxidants in walnuts fights ageing process by removing free radicals in the body. It also helps in improving quality of sperms in young generation.

The biotin and vitamin E present in walnuts strengthens hair follicles, conditions hair, reduces hair fall and somewhat acts as hair tonic. The flavonoids help in fighting dementia which is a neuro disorder of major concern in old age.

The polyunsaturated fatty acids help in developing gut immune cells which respond to bacteria and other foreign substances.

Such effects seem to be best for pregnant mothers. Walnuts are known to good for bone health also. The nutrition facts about walnut per 100 gm reveal that they contain carbohydrates to be 13.71, fats 65.2, proteins 15.3. In addition to thee they are rich in vitamins and trace elements such as calcium, sodium, phosphorus, magnesium also.

The polyunsaturated fatty acid content is 47 and mono unsaturated fatty acids are 8.9. It is advisable to eat 5-6 walnuts per day. One can incorporate walnuts in the rice, chutneys and salads. Walnuts along with olive oil are the best foods for weight loss also.

The best time to eat walnuts and other dry fruits is take them in the morning when you need to start fresh Walnuts can give you energy for certain period of time. So forget salads, green tea for weight loss say yes to walnuts now.
